Karen Kring Wixson

Dr. Karen Kring Wixson is Professor of Education at the University of Michigan, where she served as Dean of the School of Education from 1998 to 2005. She holds a B.S. in Behavioral Disabilities from the University of Wisconsin, an M.S.Ed. in Learning Disorders from the State University of New York at Binghamton, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Reading Education from Syracuse University. Before receiving her doctorate, she worked as a remedial reading and learning disabilities teacher.
Dr. Wixson is coauthor of a popular text on the assessment and instruction of students with reading and writing problems. She has published widely in the areas of literacy curriculum, instruction, and assessment in publications such as The Reading Teacher, Reading Research Quarterly, Elementary School Journal, and the Handbook of Reading Research. She received the American Educational Research Association Professional Service Award for translating reading research into goals and assessments for the state of Michigan, and the International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award. Dr. Wixson has served as director and principal investigator for the Center for the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement (CIERA). In addition, she has been an advisor to the National Research Council and helped develop the National Assessment of Educational Progress and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study reading tests.
